Student Group Description
The Brain and Addiction – This group will focus on how the body, especially the brain, responds while intoxicated and the permanent changes that may occur with consistent use/abuse of substances. The group curriculum gives concrete concepts that the students can see, as well as, experiments to demonstrate the physiological changes the body undergoes. The group will run weekly on a rotating schedule for ten weeks, with a minimum of four participants and a maximum of ten participants. This will ensure the students will only miss a maximum of two classes per session for the duration of the group. Referrals will be found appropriate for the group by the Student Assistance Counselor and administrative staff.
Anger Management – The group will focus on effectively managing anger in a variety of situations. The curriculum offers specific concrete solutions and explanations for anger management, thus giving the student the success needed to continue to develop this skill. The group will run weekly on a rotating schedule for ten weeks, with a minimum of four participants and a maximum of ten participants. This will ensure the students will only miss a maximum of two classes per session for the duration of the group. Referrals will be found appropriate for the group by the Student Assistance Counselor and administrative staff.
Anxiety Group - The group curriculum will provide the students with the tools needed to appropriately handle various types of Anxiety. The students will focus on concrete examples, role play, and skills needed to appropriately handle Anxiety in everyday life. If the Student Assistance Counselor finds any student to have extensive Anxiety that is beyond the curriculum or group setting, the student will remain in the group but will be referred to an appropriate treatment facility for additional therapy. The group will run weekly on a rotating schedule for ten weeks, with a minimum of four participants and a maximum of ten participants. This will ensure the students will only miss a maximum of two classes per session for the duration of the group. Referrals will be found appropriate for the group by the Student Assistance Counselor and administrative staff.
Girls Group/ Body Image – This group will focus on the specific issues young girls face. The group is open discussion with a minimum of specific curriculum focused on body image. The group will discuss anxiety, stress, self esteem, relationship, healthy vs. unhealthy, in addition to it will allow the girls to discover who they are and how they fit in this world. The group’s open format will continue to have weekly topics but the focus will allow the girls to control how and where the group progresses. The group will run weekly on a rotating schedule for ten to twelve weeks, with a minimum of four participants and a maximum of ten participants. This will ensure the students will only miss a maximum of two classes per session for the duration of the group. Referrals will be found appropriate for the group by the Student Assistance Counselor and administrative staff.
Anti-Bullying/Anger Management Group – The group will focus on developing a definition of the bully, victim, and by-stander. The group members will learn tools and strategies that can be applied in real life situations to effectively manage anger, stop violence or the threat of violence before it occurs, develop self-control over thoughts and actions, and receive support from other students. The group will run weekly on a rotating schedule for ten to twelve weeks, with a minimum of four participants and a maximum of ten participants. This will ensure the students will only miss a maximum of two classes per session for the duration of the group. Referrals will be found appropriate for the group by the Student Assistance Counselor and administrative staff.
Substance Abuse/Use Awareness Group – The group will focus on drugs, alcohol and addiction. This group will focus on the education of how specific drugs interact with your body, brain and addiction. There is a strong addiction/recovery portion to this group to give the students struggling with similar issues the support needed to successfully make positive life changes. . The group will run weekly on a rotating schedule for ten to twelve weeks, with a minimum of four participants and a maximum of ten participants. This will ensure the students will only miss a maximum of two classes per session for the duration of the group. Referrals will be found appropriate for the group by the Student Assistance Counselor and administrative staff.
Crisis Management - has a wide range definition and a number of situations can be considered a crisis. A crisis can refer to any situation in which a student perceives a sudden loss of their ability to use effective problem solving and coping skills. Crisis management is meant to offer short term help to de-escalate the situation and to offer appropriate problem solving skills. When necessary, appropriate referrals will be made to school based groups or referred to out-side counseling or referred to a Crisis Intervention Center for further evaluation. .
Early Intervention Program, EIP – The EIP program is facilitated by Genesis Counseling Center to the families of Audubon School District. The program will provide early intervention services to students and their families in a variety of behavioral specific problem areas. EIP program will outline simplistic and effective for middle school as well as high school students and their parents. The program will address a variety of life issues with the focus on relationship building and appropriate levels of respect for themselves.
